Arrest of citizen for encouraging people to sound car horns condemned
By Sri Lanka Brief-
Issuing a statement the United National Party (UNP) has expressed its deep concern of the arrest of an individual allegedly involved in the recent honking of car horns at the vehicular convoy of a VIP.
According to media reports this individual was identified by police as the person responsible for organising this public demonstration. The UNP has requesteded that the Government clearly explains what was the reason behind the arrest of this individual.
Meanwhile Ambika Satkunanathan @ambikasat has tweeted:
<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet” data-theme=”dark”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>What’s the offence for which he has been arrested, i.e. under which law/section? <a href=”https://t.co/sABfC583om”>https://t.co/sABfC583om</a></p>— Ambika Satkunanathan (@ambikasat) <a href=”https://twitter.com/ambikasat/status/1387959410132094976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>April 30, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>
The police have reportedly reacted to a video that has gone viral on social media portraying motorists honking their horns at a passing VIP convoy.
While recognising that the security of visiting foreign dignitaries cannot be compromised, there appeared to have been no threat to the VIP or any fellow citizens. The police must confirm under what charges this individual has been arrested and whether or not any threat was posed to the VIP by these actions, insists UNP.
