Families gathered in Vavuniya, Mannar and Kilinochchi towns, joined by local activists and politicians.

"We didn't start this struggle today or yesterday. We have been demanding answers for 12 years," a representative of the Mannar families said. Over 100 protesters across the North-East have died since widespread protests started 5 years ago.

Earlier this week new US Amabassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung met with representatives of the families in Jaffna.
